Our Story

1987

The Beginning

Black Crag began in 1987 with a simple idea. Experience should matter more than sales. John Harrison, a lifelong mountaineer who had spent decades exploring the Lake District and beyond, opened a small outdoor gear shop in Keswick after growing frustrated with shops selling unsuitable equipment to people heading into serious terrain. He wanted to create a place where honest advice and real knowledge came first.

1995

Growing the Team

As the shop grew, so did the team. In the mid 1990s, Sarah Mitchell joined after meeting John on a trek to Everest Base Camp. Her expertise in boot fitting and foot biomechanics changed how Black Crag approached footwear. Boot fitting became a careful, thoughtful process rather than a quick sale, reinforcing the belief that the right gear can make or break an adventure.

2003

Becoming a Community Hub

Black Crag began hosting weekly social walks, navigation workshops, and gear maintenance evenings. What started as informal gatherings became a cornerstone of the local outdoor community. The shop wasn't just selling gear—it was fostering a culture of safe, responsible, joyful outdoor exploration.

2015

Next Generation

In 2015, the next generation joined the business when John’s daughter Emma came on board after years working as an outdoor pursuits instructor. She brought fresh ideas and energy while staying true to the values the shop was built on. Today, the team includes specialists in climbing, wild camping, trail running, and mountaineering, all united by a shared passion for the outdoors.

2025

Today

Today, Black Crag remains family owned and proudly independent. We have chosen to stay rooted in Keswick rather than expanding or moving fully online, because what we offer is built on real human connection. Honest conversations, expert fitting, and shared stories are at the heart of what we do. We are still that small shop in the Lakes, trusted by people who value knowledge, care, and a genuine love for the outdoors.
